The inaugural Singapore Grand Prix was the sensation of the 2008 Formula 1 season – providing not only a great event, a unique spectacle and an impressive new circuit, but also a thrilling race and what seemed at the time like a feel-good story as Fernando Alonso revitalised the struggling Renault team by taking a shock win.
Alonso was brilliant that day, utterly unstoppable when he got to the front even though his Renault was still not really a match for the McLarens and Ferraris.
Unfortunately, as has become all too clear in recent weeks, the manner in which he was vaulted to the head of the pack was the most shocking display of cheating the sport has ever seen.
That's a massive shame for all the hard-working members of the Renault team (Alonso included) whose reputations have been tarnished by the actions of others, and also for the Singapore organisers, who broke new ground for F1 yet saw their fantastic event tainted by a scandal that they could not have foreseen.
The FIA's judgement earlier this week means that a chastened Renault team will still be in the field in Singapore, albeit minus the towering presence of Flavio Briatore and the rather more operationally significant talent of Pat Symonds.
